The windows and doors are added at the same time. Once the roof is covered the tiles can be added and made waterproof. About this time, a different crew will add the siding to the house. In a standard house, this is vinyl siding fit over the plywood. Brick houses would obviously have bricks built into walls here.

Once the building is weatherproof, the first fix can be done. This is the laying of pipes, electrics, plumbing and all the other little jobs that add function to a house. Once this has been done with walls and roof space is insulated using rockwool boards or other methods, then these have drywall boards placed over them to form the walls of the rooms.

Removing windows is the most arduous part of the replacement process. Opening your home to the elements isn’t something that should be done lightly, and as well as all the practical considerations like tools, the windows themselves and the labor to do the work, you should also check the weather forecast for the next few days!

A wooden window can often be sawn out of the cavity once the glass has been removed. PVC or metal windows take a little more effort. First job is to remove the casements if there are any, or the glass if there isn’t. Removing a metal window frame normally involves a grinder to cut through the frame in order to remove it. Once the frame is removed, check around the cavity and remove any retaining bolts or screws that used to secure the old window. Tidy up the holes or fill them if they’re in the wrong place for the new ones. Clear up the brickwork around the window and prepare it for the new frame. Do any filling, leveling or any other work you can do before adding the new window.

Adding the new window is almost a reversal of removal. Remove the plastic protective layer from the frame of the new window. Leave it intact over the casement or glass. Position the new window in the cavity and ensure its level before securing it with frame fasteners or retaining bolts. Add a silicone bead around the frame to make sure its weather tight and add any further beading that the window may have.

When fitting windows the main factor to consider is the wall into which they will be installed. It might be a solid wall or cavity depending on the age of the house. If your home has solid walls then the technique differs from installing into cavity walls. Once the old window is removed and the area cleaned and filled, it is just a question of fitting the new one in its place. Bolts are either drilled or shot through the new frame to hold in place and the junction is made good with mortar or sealant.

Cavity walls are found on some newer homes as it is a relatively recent method of construction. Many replacement windows will have forms which slide into the cavity and can be fastened in there. This adds a little extra structural rigidity and improves the weather sealing of the window.

Bay windows need a little extra planning too. They can have load bearing qualities which needs to be taken into account when replacing the windows. These should only be replaced once a structural check has been made to the bay. Therefore if you’re planning to change the window in a bay you must have professional advice before doing the work.
